All ultrasound equipment for anomaly scanning is less than 2 years old and regularly updated and upgraded.
Other practices (to save the money) may not put money into infrastructure. This may not allow you to have optimal ultrasound images. Ultrasounds are computers. How many computers do you use that are over 3-4 years old? If they are, you probably are hoping for a new one. Computer technology is advancing rapidly. Hence, ultrasound technology is also advancing rapidly. One important portion of ultrasound technology is frame rate. Frame rate is the amount of picture frames that go through a video in one second. The average movie is 24 frames per second. Many complex portions of ultrasound require in-depth processing power by a computer to deliver clarity as well as increasing frame rate. An example would be that of a flip book. Flipping through the pictures of a flip book slowly yields a very choppy picture. Flipping through it quickly almost gives the idea of a flip book turning into a movie like image. In computers, processor speed doubles every 18 months. Using this rule, on the average an ultrasound machine which is 3 years old will be four-times slower than a current machine. A machine that is 6 years old will be 16 times slower! All of the high level ultrasound equipment at Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine has been upgraded in December of 2008.
